Dental Implants or Dentures: What Makes Most Sense?

Dental Implants Salida, CA

To fill in gaps, you may choose dental implants for your mouth. This is a popular method, but it is not the only one. Many people prefer dentures instead. It can be difficult to decide which method is most effective and right for your appearance and oral health. You should consider the benefits and drawbacks of both of these. Then, you can speak to your dentist for additional recommendations and guidance.

Comparing the two

Both implants and dentures are common solutions to replacing teeth. People may get partial or full dentures. Likewise, implants can work to replace one tooth or multiple teeth. Dental implants require a more invasive surgical procedure, while dentures are not as intensive of a process. Implants are made of titanium alloy and attach to a screw-like post in the jaw. Dentures are plastic false teeth on a gum-colored acrylic base that fit over the person’s jaw.

Removable vs. permanent

When it comes to most dentures, the person can remove them. This can make these easier to clean and maintain. If the wearer soaks the dentures overnight and brushes them at least twice a day, the appliance can be clean and functional. Implants are permanent, though the person can still brush and floss normally. Some people do not like the embarrassing risk that the dentures could slip or fall out.

Durability

It is important to understand that dental implants are more durable than dentures. People who are not careful of what they eat can crack the false teeth on their dentures or even break the base. While cleaning the dentures, the person must be mindful not to drop the appliance on the ground or counter. The titanium implants should be able to withstand biting and eating most foods. With both options, the patient should continue to visit the dentist regularly for follow-up appointments.

Time factor

Patients who want a faster solution may want to consider dentures over implants. For dentures, the dentist will make a mold of the person’s mouth and send it to a lab. There, a technician will make the appliance, where it could be ready in a few weeks or even days. However, the implanting process can take up to several months because the dentist must wait to put crowns on the posts until there is sufficient jawbone growth.

Insurance coverage for dental implants and dentures

A patient should always contact the dental insurance provider before getting either one of these teeth-replacement treatments. Many insurance companies will not cover dental implants, as providers often consider this to be a cosmetic procedure. Medicare and other plans often do not cover dentures either. However, some portions of the implant process, such as the X-rays and crowning, may get insurance help.

Smile again

It is not easy living without a mouthful of healthy teeth. This can affect your smile and ability to enjoy the foods you love. With implants or dentures, you can change this. Think about your needs and the different facets of both of these treatments so you can choose wisely.
