What Materials are Used to Make Dentures?

Back before dentures were invented, people had to undergo some pretty complex procedures to replace missing teeth. Real human and animal teeth were used as replacements, as well as bone fragments. False teeth were even once made from lead – a material that is now known to be harmful to humans.

Even George Washington had false teeth that were made out of lead at some point in his life.

Today, the most economical way to replace missing teeth is through the use of dentures. Partial dentures can be used for those who are only missing a few teeth, while full denture sets are a great option for anyone who has lost most of their natural teeth.

Dentures consist of different parts which are often made out of a variety of materials.

The various components of dentures

1. Artificial teeth

Dentures come with artificial teeth that are often made out of composite resin or porcelain. Many dentists recommend porcelain since they look more like natural teeth and are more durable than their composite counterparts.

Porcelain has similar translucent properties to real teeth enamel, which makes the false teeth look and feel like real teeth to the wearer. One downside of artificial teeth made out of porcelain is their brittle nature. The prosthetic can easily break when dropped on a hard surface. Porcelain artificial teeth also cause more wear to other teeth than artificial teeth. Of course, this is not an issue if the patient has already lost all of their natural teeth and needs a full set of dentures.

2. The framework

Dentures are supported by a framework that rests on the wearer's gums. This frame is often made out of acrylic resin or nylon polymers. While not as common, chrome cobalt can also be used to make this component.

When a person is interested in dentures, the dentist takes a mold of the person's teeth and gums. It is used to make a wax version of the dentures to ensure it fits properly and looks natural. If everything looks good, the mold will be sent to a lab where the plate is made. It takes about two weeks for the completed dentures to get back to the dentist for installation.

Denture sets that include artificial gumlines that match the patient's gums are typically made with resin, while metals are used to make partial plates that will be hidden by the wearer's real teeth.

Other important things to know about dentures

How long a set of dentures lasts depends on several factors like the wearer's dedication to oral hygiene and the materials the dentures are made with. Dentures should be cleaned each day with a denture cleaner and soaked in denture solution to keep it moist and clean.

People who wear dentures are also advised to pay attention to their gumline while brushing since healthy gums help to keep these prosthetics in place.
