Dental Veneers and Dental Laminates

Dental veneers and dental laminates are both cosmetic dentistry options to transform your smile. Whether you’re unhappy with the shape, size, or color of your teeth, dental veneers and laminates procedures at Smile World Dental can change the appearance of your teeth to your desire. But which is one best to improve your teeth: dental veneers or laminates?

What Are Dental Veneers?

Dental veneers are thin shells made of porcelain or composites to change the appearance of a tooth. They’re custom-made to fit over the front of teeth to alter their shape, size, or color.

Dental veneers can cover various deformities like chipped, cracked, discolored, and stained teeth. Porcelain veneers are a more popular option as they’re durable and resistant to most stains.

During dental veneer procedures, a little bit of enamel is scraped off to make room for veneers to fit comfortably and so that they don’t feel bulky. Getting a dental veneer is an irreversible process.

What Are Dental Laminates?

Dental laminates are attached to the front surface of a tooth to enhance its appearance. As they both have the same function and advantages, laminates are an advanced form of dental veneers. Laminates made of porcelain layers are thinner than veneers and bonded to teeth through a less invasive procedure.

The teeth structure or enamel doesn’t have to be altered in any way to attach dental laminates. So there’s no harm to natural teeth during dental laminates procedure.

Which Is the Better Option: Laminates or Veneers?

When it comes to the primary function, both dental veneers and laminates serve the purpose of changing the physical appearance of a tooth when they’re broken, cracked, crooked, or discolored. But there are certainly differences in the benefits of veneers and laminates.

Treatment Process

The treatment procedure for dental laminates is relatively more straightforward and faster than veneers. Laminates can be placed in 1 or 2 sessions without altering the teeth structure or removing enamel. While for dental veneers, the enamel is scraped off, changing the teeth irreversibly. After a veneer procedure, you lose the stability and strength of the outer enamel.

Durability

Compared to composite veneers, both porcelain veneers and dental laminates are highly durable. With proper care and a dental routine, they can last up to 10 to 15 years. But porcelain veneers cannot be replaced when broken or chipped.

Treatment Cost

When it comes to cost, porcelain veneers are more expensive than composite veneers. Also, getting advanced porcelain laminates is costlier than porcelain veneers.

Physical Appearance

Porcelain veneers have a natural appearance as they scatter light, just like real teeth. They’re also more resistant to stains from coffee, red wine, soft drinks, and dyed food. Porcelain laminates are also thin, transparent, and almost natural-looking.
